windy dog hill is at approximately 1,300 foot elevation upside Vermont’s Green Mountains. Located on a well maintained town dirt road we ask our guests to please drive slowly. Appropriate footwear is strongly recommended as our driveway is gravel and paths around windy dog hill are mulched or grass, not hard surfaced.


From Australia and Parts to Our West and South

Find your way to U.S. Route 7 heading north out of Middlebury. About 8 miles north of Middlebury, turn right onto VT Route 116 and drive into downtown Bristol. When the one traffic light in town turns green, drive straight through the intersection and out of town. From the light drive 3.2 miles and turn right onto Route 17. Drive up into the hills and at about 1.9 miles turn left onto Dan Sargent Road.

On Dan Sargent Road, over the bridge hard to the left and back to the right, follow the road up past the Quaker Meeting House. Come to a “T” intersection (side road coming in on your right – big red barn on your left). Look up and to your right - windy dog hill is the dark-gray Cape Cod style home set way back from the “T” intersection. Drive straight ahead and turn right into the driveway – and for now, you’re home!

From Portugal and Parts to Our East

Find your way to Interstate 89 heading north from Montpelier. Take exit #9 – Middlesex. Turn left at the bottom of the ramp, and turn left again at the “T” intersection. Drive a short ways and turn right onto Vermont Route 100B.
Follow 100B into Waitsfield Village and out the other side. At a sweeping curve going left – you turn right onto Vermont Route 17. Follow that up the mountain. When you drive past Mad River Glen ski area keep going up the mountain to the top of the Appalachian Gap – elevation 2,356 feet.

Stop and admire the western view. The opening scene of 1994’s Jack Nicholson/Michelle Pfeiffer movie “Wolf” was shot here at sunset. What a howler! Drive down the mountain and use one of those lower gears rather than riding your brakes. At the bottom … and you’ll know when that is … keep driving straight for 3.4 miles and pass the Jerusalem Country Store on your left. Continue another 1.7 miles and turn right onto Dan Sargent Road.

Alternate Route if you’re concerned about road or auto conditions going over the Gap: Continue north on Interstate 89 and get off at exit #12 – Williston. Turn left at the bottom of the ramp and follow the directions from Canada below.
From Canada and Parts to Our North

Find your way to Interstate 89 heading south from Burlington. Get off at exit #12 – Williston. At the bottom of the ramp, turn right and follow Route 2A about 5 miles and bump into a “T” intersection. Turn left (heading south) onto Vermont Route 116. From that turn it is about 17 miles to Route 17 after your drive through Hinesburg, then through Starksboro Village. Turn left onto Route 17. Drive up into the hills and at about 1.9 miles turn left onto Dan Sargent Road.
